ABOUT ME

Hello, hello, hello, beautiful people

My name is Jacob and this is my attempt at a personal webpage. Hopefully, this serves anyone curious about me to get to know a little bit more about my teaching, scholarly work, and service.

If I were to give some highlights:

I love teaching and want to constantly self-improve as well as lift other educators up.

I believe studying not only bias but also educational interventions is pivotal.

I'm Team #OpenScience and try to stay on top of the best practices for research methods.

I have a loud and proud commitment to DEI issues. It's a mammoth of an issue and so chipping away and taking baby steps is the important action we can do.

AREAS OF RESEARCH

OVERARCHING THEME: BELIEF DEVELOPMENT, BELIEF CHANGE, AND BIAS

My research explores the pervasive influence of bias – from the role it plays in political polarization, to the impact it has on the science we conduct. In response to events in the scientific and public sphere, I’m interested in factors (e.g., intellectual humility, willingness to admit wrongness, political identity) particularly the ways that scientific and political beliefs can change.

The big picture for my research area is two-fold. First, I want the field of psychology to earn the trust and passion the public has for our field. Real, replicable accomplishments such as cognitive behavioral therapy, work on prejudice, and understanding discrimination are examples of the best work we have produced. I believe that by improving our methods, our measurements, and our research process, the field can continue to make meaningful contributions that help society. Second, I want to contribute to reducing the political polarization that has reached a toxic level in the U.S.
